General Jack J.F.R. Jacob (1923-2016)
A War Hero
Lt. General J.F. (Jack) Jacob, was a highly decorated and successful general in the Indian army. He was a Jew and his parents were from Baghdad and settled in Calcutta.
He was the hero of the Bangladesh war of 1971, where we went against instructions to obtain the surrender of the Pakistani Lt. General.
A touching memorial service was held for him at the famed Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue in Mumbai, by Mr. Solomon F. Sopher, managing trustee of the Sir Jacob Sassoon Charity Trusts. The governor of Maharashtra State, Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao, was the chief guest. Among the other important personnages and dignitaries present were Mr. David Akov, consul general of Israel, the esteemed Rabbi and spiritual guide of the Synagogues, Rabbi Ya’aqob Menashe, of Midrash BEN ISH HAI in New york, the deputy high commissioner of Bangladesh, Samina Naz as well as numerous other personages and dignitaries.
